Born 12/4/30 Wausau, WI, died July 19, 2010. Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linder Ruth Martin, his parents Harold Kemp Martin & Rubye Smeaton Martin, two cousins, William R. Smeaton & Robert B. Smeaton. Richard graduated Minocqua High School (WI), class of 1948, and attended Ripon College (WI) from 1948-1950 and Mankato State College 1959-1962. He was employed by the Milwaukee Sentinel 1951-1952. From 1952-1954, he and his wife operated a business in Eau Claire, WI. He was employed by Ridder Publications/Knight-Ridder Newspapers at the St. Paul Dispatch and Pioneer Press for 44 years, from 1954 until he retired in 1998. He was a circulation department District Supervisor, on assignments in southwestern Wisconsin (La Crosse), southern Minnesota (Owatonna, Rochester and Albert Lea), and from 1973-1998 in western Wisconsin (St. Croix County). After retirement, he trained as an American Red Cross volunteer, serving in Disaster Services, both on the local level as the Disaster Chair/Coordinator for the St. Croix County division of the St. Croix Valley Chapter and also as a DSHR (national) volunteer. In 1999, he served as a family service worker in Omaha, NE after the floods there, and in November in south Florida, following Hurricane Irene. In 2000, he was assigned to the national disaster in Eagan MN during the flooding there in July, working in service centers in St. Paul and Eagan. In 2001, he worked in mass care and family service during the St. Croix River flood in April and May. He was also assigned to one of the ARC Rapid Response Teams for the state of Minnesota. He was on the board of directors of the St. Croix Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross. He is survived by four step-children – Theresa Quinlivan (David Asp), Hudson, WI; Shawn Quinlivan (Janice Minasian), Chatsworth, CA; Craig Quinlivan (Pamela), Albert Lea, MN; and Brian Quinlivan (Catherine), St. Paul, MN: seven step-grandchildren – Melissa Ostley, James Ostley (Sarah Klein), Rachael Magnuson (Rony), Joshua Quinlivan, Elizabeth Vanderbrink (Josh), Carmen Quinlivan, and Paige Quinlivan and many step-great grandchildren. He is also survived by three cousins – Mary Ellen Smeaton, Minocqua, WI; Charles Smeaton (Janet), Woodruff, WI; and Thomas Smeaton (Betty), Minocqua, WI; sister-in-law Grace D. Broome, Washington, NC and nephews, nieces and friends. Richard’s interests and hobbies were classical music (SPCO member since 1997), photography, Bridge, gardening and travel – in addition to domestic travel, from 1996-2001, he participated in five international Elderhostel programs: Turkey, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Russia, Italy, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Portugal and Spain were the countries included in the five tours. Funeral services at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 502 County Road UU, Hudson, WI on Friday, July 23, 2010 at 2:00 PM. Interment in Willow River Cemetery, Hudson, WI. Visitation at O’Connell Family Funeral Home, Hudson, WI on Thursday, July 22, 2010 from 3:00 – 5:00 PM. Memorials preferred to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
