Robert R. “Bob” Berg

Robert Russell Berg, age 84 of Prescott, passed away March 27, 2018. Bob was born November 12, 1933 in Niles, Michigan, to Russell and Wilma (Zimmer) Berg. He graduated from Minneapolis Roosevelt High School in 1951. He was united in marriage on May 9, 1953 to Janet Jean Dickson. Their marriage was blessed with four children, Randy, Ryan, Rick, and Helen. Bob worked as a boilermaker for the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Blacksmiths, Forgers and Helpers, Union # 647. In 1963, Bob began his career with 3M as a Maintenance Mechanic, working for 31 years as a member of the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union; retiring in 1994. Bob and Jan were passionate Rock Hounds, and owned and operated “Berg’s Rock Shop” in Prescott for 40 years, retiring from their business in 2011.
Outside of Bob’s work, he enjoyed the peacefulness of the outdoors, feeding deer and turkeys in his yard, hunting, fishing, grilling on the barbeque, and having a few cold beers with his family. He enjoyed tinkering in his garage and building a better mousetrap, and building squirrel-, raccoon-, and deer-proof bird feeders. Bob was also an avid reader and a life-long learner. Bob and Jan treasured 65 years of marriage, and were fortunate to share many travels together throughout the western U.S. and to China, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, and Alaska. They also took pleasure in time spent with other Rock Hounds each winter at the Rock, Gem, and Mineral Show in Tucson, AZ. Bob and Jan were also staunch DFL supporters. Bob was especially proud of his children, grandchildren, and twin great-granddaughters.
Bob will remain in the hearts of his loving wife, Jan; children, Randy (Mary) Berg of Ellsworth, Ryan (Nancy) Berg of Woodbury, Rick (Doreen) Berg of Hastings, and Helen (Mitch) Raebel of Bay City; grandchildren: Ryley and Hallie Berg, Kristina (Jared) Harding and Jacob (Gina) Berg, Cody and Adeline Raebel; twin great-granddaughters, Hazel and Frankie Harding; and nieces Linda Sue Fish and Ann Marie Luczak. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Mary Ann Papp.
A Celebration of Bob’s Life will take place 4:00 – 7:00 PM, with a time of sharing at 6:30 PM Friday, March 30, 2018 at the O’Connell-Benedict Family Funeral Home, 1339 Orrin Rd., Prescott. Memorials are Preferred to the Prescott Foundation.
