Shelby Berkseth

Shelby Jean (Scholl) Berkseth passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 3rd, 2018 at the Baldwin Care Center, after a short battle with cancer. She was born on March 30th, 1946 to Howard Orville Scholl and Alice Mary (Parent) Scholl. Shelby had one sister, Joyce (Delroy) Stone, and one brother, Roger Scholl. Shelby attended Cloverleaf Grade School, which was northeast of Baldwin, and Baldwin High School. Shelby had been a life-long resident of Baldwin.

Shelby married Donald William Berkseth on January 2nd, 1962, while he was stationed in Olympia, Washington with the United States Army. Shelby joined Don on the family dairy farm south of the Baldwin Legion. Daughter Kimberly was born in 1965, followed by daughter Tamara in 1968. In the spring of 1970, the family moved to the farmstead where Shelby continued to live for 48 years.

Shelby had a love for animals that began when she raised a kit fox as a child. This love continued to grow on the farm when she nurtured newborn calves, kittens and puppies, and adopted several wild horses and burros. She enjoyed bird watching and her favorite was the cardinal.

Shelby will be remembered for being strong and hardworking. When she wasn’t milking cows or helping with fieldwork, she also gardened. She canned tomatoes for barbecue and spaghetti sauce, dill pickles, bread and butter pickles, freezer sweet corn and strawberry freezer jam. Shelby was a master seamstress who enjoyed sewing clothing, Halloween costumes, quilts and stuffed animals for her daughters.

Shelby was on the Women’s Pool League and Women’s Softball League for the former Jer-leens Bar in Baldwin. She was also a member of the Snowmobile Club. She enjoyed fishing, travelling, country western music, going to casinos, doing puzzles and reading books. Her love of reading made her a ‘walking encyclopedia’. She never lost a game of Trivial Pursuit or Scrabble. In recent years, her pastimes included ‘junking’, looking for agates with her friend Merv, and spending time with family.

Shelby was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Alice; siblings, Joyce and Roger; and husband, Donald. She is survived by daughters, Kimberly (Scott) Coddington of Baldwin and Tamara (Randal) Ramberg of Baldwin; four grandchildren, Alisha and Celina Coddington, and Lyndsey and Nathaniel Ramberg; many in-laws, nieces and nephews; her best friend, Karen; and many other relatives and friends.

Gathering of Family and Friends will be held on Friday, May 11 from 4-7 PM at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home, 1010 Newton St., Baldwin, WI. A Private Family and Friends Service will be held on Saturday, May 12 at 3PM at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Baldwin. Memorials preferred to the Baldwin Care Center.
