Shelly Read, age 62, of Ellsworth, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2025, at her residence. Shelly was born on December 26, 1962, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Donald Miller and Gloria Sjogren. She was raised in Cottage Grove, Minnesota, where she graduated from high school. Shelly had a deep love for learning and enjoyed expanding her knowledge on topics that piqued her interest. She pursued her education in veterinary technology in Waseca, Minnesota. However, after being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, she realized that the physical demands of the field would be too challenging. Determined to continue her education, she enrolled at Mankato State University, where she took psychology courses, fascinated by the human mind and emotional expression. She would be married to Jerold Read in 1982 to which children Joe, Mandy, and Jeff were born. This union would later dissolve.
Shelly expressed herself in many creative ways, particularly through her art. She loved painting with acrylics, creating murals and artistic depictions of her surroundings. She even painted demolition derby cars with intricate designs before hopping into the driver’s seat to compete. Her creativity extended to painting the family crest on their garage door and designing unique, hand-painted rocks to gift to loved ones. Her artistic talents led friends to seek her advice on interior design, and she eventually created a Facebook group to collaborate with others who shared her passion.
Shelly had a deep appreciation for Native American history and mythology. She also loved the Renaissance period and eagerly anticipated trips to the Renaissance Festival in Shakopee and the County Fair. Music was a big part of her life-she enjoyed classic ’70s soft rock from bands like the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac, as well as old-school country artists like Tanya Tucker. In addition to painting, she found joy in crocheting, sewing, and cross-stitching.
A free spirit, Shelly’s artistic vision also influenced her spirituality. She deeply respected Native American customs and beliefs, which played a significant role in shaping her personal faith. Later in life, she felt a profound connection to God and considered her relationship with Him to be her highest priority.
Shelly is survived by her children, Joe (Nikki) Read of Baldwin, Mandy (Andy) Keim of Amboy, Minnesota, and Jeff Read of Baldwin; grandchildren Alexa, Lacey, June, Dawn, Joey, Jonny, Domanic, and Kalie; her mother, Gloria Sjogren of Belgrade, Minnesota; and her devoted partner Lynn Behrens. She was preceded in death by her father, Donald, and her stillborn grandchild, Unnie.
A celebration of Shelly’s life is being planned for a later date. She will be laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery in Colfax, Minnesota. Memorials are preferred to the family and can be directed to the funeral home.
