Sherman Sutter

Sherman Anders “Sherm” Sutter, age 78, of Hudson, passed away at his home on Thursday evening, August 25, 2011. He was born the son of John and Mae (Anderson) Sutter on March 8, 1933 in Hudson.  Sherm was raised by his grandparents, Andrew & Bertha “Ma & Pa” Anderson on River Road in St. Joseph Township.

He attended high school in Hudson, and at age 16 he went to work for Andersen Windows. He was a supervisor for the cutting department (though secretly he ran the place), and over the years supervised groups 1 through 8. For 12 years, he also drove a weekend route hauling bulk milk for Elmer Dahm. After 39½ years of working at Andersen’s, Sherm retired in 1989.

On July 12, 1952 Sherm was united in marriage to the love of his life, Margaret “Peggy” Gartmann at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hudson. They were blessed with 4 children: Greg, Steve, Mark, and Sandra.  Sherm and Peggy enjoyed traveling around the US in their motorhome – they visited 47 of the states, and they took a couple of cruises. They had many good times during winters spent in Arizona and Florida.

Sherm served in the National Guard and was a member of the Bayport American Legion. He was a past city alderman for Hudson. He enjoyed woodworking and tinkering with mechanical things; he was always helping his family and friends. Shem built yard games, and he enjoyed playing cards – especially 500. Of course, all of his games were painted green and gold for his beloved Packers. His joking, prankster ways will be (mostly) missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and special aunt and uncle, Frank & Anna Krueger. Sherm is survived by his wife of 59 years, Peggy; sons, Greg (Margie) of New Richmond, Steve (Colleen) of Hudson, and Mark (Jill) of Houlton; daughter, Sandra (Tim) Meyer of River Falls; 13 grandchildren: Carrie, Jill and Megan, Brandi (Pat) Hook, Stephanie (Tony) Waters, Sarah (Blake) Woxland, Ben (Cassie) Sutter, Courtney, Meghan, Alexandra & Luke Sutter, Colton & Hayden Meyer; 13 great-grandchildren; four siblings; and his extended Sutter family in the Fox River Valley area of WI.

A Memorial Gathering will be held to celebrate Sherm’s life from 5 until 7 PM on Thursday, Sept. 1st at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the ALS Foundation.
