Shirley Ann Johnson

Shirley Ann (Preston) Johnson, age 87 of Woodville, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2017. She was born on  September 20, 1930, in Woodville, the daughter of Theodore and Carrie (Loney) Nelson. Shirley attended Maple Grove School, and graduated from Woodville High School with the class of 1947. On September 21, 1947, Shirley was united in marriage to Donald Preston at the Lutheran Parsonage in Baldwin; they were blessed with three children, and enjoyed many years of happiness until Donald’s passing in 1984. On September 18, 1992, Shirley found happiness again, and was married to Elton Johnson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. She worked for the Baldwin-Woodville school district for nearly 40 years as both a bus driver and custodian.

Shirley was a dedicated and meticulous hard worker; she thoroughly enjoyed to focus on staying busy at work as well as “putzing around” in the yard while she was cutting grass or doing lawn care projects. Shirley also loved to showcase her expertise in handiwork; she lovingly worked on fleece blankets and other crafts in her spare time. She was a proud follower of the Minnesota Twins and always enjoyed watching the Green Bay Packers on Sundays.

Shirley will remain in the hearts of her children, Dennis (Carol) Preston, Suzanne (Paul) Zimmer, and Dan (Audrey) Preston; grandchildren, Stacy (Scott) Hilmanowske, Nathan (Leah) Zimmer, Heather Jo (Clifford) Preston, and Jordan Preston; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Evan, Mara, Merrick, Nori, Carson and Cayden; siblings, Irma Mohn, Delores “Toots” Thompson, and Sandra (Bill) Arndt; as well as many extended family and close friends.

She was preceded in death by her first husband of 37 years, Donald Preston, and second husband of 25 years, Elton Johnson; parents, Theodore and Carrie Nelson; grandson, Brad Preston; niece, Rita Runnigan; nephew, Craig Mohn; and two of her infant siblings.

A Memorial service for Shirley will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 25 at Zion Lutheran in Woodville. A gathering of family and friends will be held at Zion Lutheran from 4-7 PM on Friday, November 24.
