Tom was born on October 24, 1929 in Calhoun, MO, to his parents, Charles and Edna (Trogden) Brown. He was raised on his parents farm and graduated from high school in Clinton, MO, after which he joined the U.S. Army and was sent to Korea. He served his country from 1949 through 1952. He started at Bendix Corp in Kansas City, and later moved to Minnesota to work at Fabri Tek, Harris Manufacturing, and Midwest Circuits as a manufacturing manager. The family moved to Santa Rosa, CA for two years in 1970-71, after which he returned to the midwest to work in Baldwin at CTS.

Later, Tom became an active member of United Methodist Church in Hudson, where he served on their Board of Directors and helped to develop the concept and implementation of Christian Community Homes.
