Verna Mae Johnson, age 89 of Prescott, passed away peacefully April 12, 2019 at the Prescott Nursing Home surrounded by her family. Verna was born November 2, 1929 in River Falls, WI, to George and Clara (Deiss) Armbruster. She was united in marriage to Eugene L. Johnson in October 12, 1948 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Big River. Their marriage was blessed with four children, Michael, Suzanne, Julie, and Joseph. Along with raising her family, Verna worked at Smead Manufacturing for many years, and delighted in the many friendships she made there.
Verna spent many years, before she became ill, with her special church group of ladies known as “The Stitchers”. These wonderful lady friends met weekly and sewed many quilts, embroidered dish towels and such, to sell at their yearly fall festival at St. Joseph’s parish. It was a beautiful and loving way to contribute to their church.
Verna will remain in the hearts of her children, Michael (Cheri) Johnson, Suzanne (Rich) Matzek, Julie (Tom) Stark, Joe (Brenda) Johnson; 6 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Arlene (Ed) Siewelo; sister-in-law, Jeannie Armbruster; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ken and Carol Krech; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene; parents, George and Clara Armbruster; siblings, Melva, Marge, Herbert and Donald; step-siblings, Howard and Bernard Armbruster, and Georgia Mae Hildebrandt.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place 11:00 AM Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at St. Joseph Catholic Parish, 269 Dakota St., Prescott, with Fr. George Szews officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30 AM until the start of Mass at the church. Interment will be take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Prescott, WI. Pallbearers assisting with the service are: Bart Matzek, Brad Matzek, Mike Matzek, Brian Johnson, Nick Johnson, and Dale Krech. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dan Krech and Doug Krech. Memorials are preferred to St. Joseph Catholic Parish.
