Vernal Ellen Sample Smith, age 91 of Hudson, formerly of Houston, Texas and Colorado Springs, Colorado died peacefully on December 30, 2015 at the Christian Community Home in Hudson, Wisconsin.

Vernal was born April 26, 1924 in Atoka, Oklahoma to parents James and Fannie (Williams) Sample. She grew up in Pasadena, Texas and graduated from Pasadena High School. Vernal worked as a bookkeeper for several family businesses. Vernal loved her family dearly; and her genuinely loving attitude and positive spirit were expressed to everyone. She enjoyed the companionship of her dogs, and liked spending time in her garden. Vernal found relaxation in reading a good book. Her enjoyment of life was as diverse as watching The Sound of Music to reading Harry Potter. She dearly loved the Rocky Mountains, and her spirit will always be living in the purple mountain majesties of Pikes Peak.

Vernal will remain in the hearts of her son; John “J.B.” Baxter, and his wife Tamara; grandchildren, Nathan and Wyatt; and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sisters, Millie and Juanita.

Private family services were held.
