October 9th, 1944 – October 14th , 2020

Virgil “Skootch” G. Hammerstad, age 76, of Hudson Wisconsin, passed away unexpectedly October 14, 2020. Virgil was born October 9, 1944 in Eau Claire, WI and raised in Strum, WI. He married his wife, Constance in 1966.  They moved to New Richmond, WI and he began his education in Computer Science. Connie and Virgil had two beautiful daughters Carrie and Jodi.

In 1969 Virgil joined Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota and was promoted steadily until he reached the title of Group Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. When he retired from Blue Cross he started his own consulting business – Creative Benefit Consultants. He worked with the Minnesota Service Cooperatives and served as a consultant for their City, County, and School Pools. Through his creativity and innovation, he was successful at significantly growing their business over his 25 year tenure. He was a brilliant and skilled negotiator, yet humble and personable in his work relationships.

In addition to his professional success, he was also a devoted father and grandfather. He loved spending time with his family, watching the Packers (win), restoring classic cars, and traveling to Arizona in the winter. He had a sharp sense of humor and enjoyed making people laugh. He was a man full of generosity, kindness, and unconditional love.

Virgil will be missed deeply by his wife, Connie; children, Carrie Hogan (Steve Peterson) and Jodi Johnson; grandchildren Jessica (Todd) Cole, Reid (Tisa) Hogan, Ross Hogan (Madison Raley), Benjamin Johnson, Ellie Johnson, and Addison Johnson; great grandchildren Neri Cole and Levi Cole; siblings, Jane (Gerald) Bergerson, Michael (Judy) Hammerstad, and Tammie Hammerstad; brother in law Wallace Back; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

    • Very saddened to hear this news. I started at BCBSM in 1970 and retired in 2016 so have a lot of fond and fun memories of Virgil. He was a dreamer and innovator and came up with product innovations that propelled Blue Cross in the market. I worked closely with him on the production for the launch of Aware Gold, the American Duramed acquisition, and even an Annual Meeting with a Minnesota Legacy theme where I made dozens of ceramic loons that Connie filled with flowers for centerpieces. During the last 10 years of my career at Blue, Virgil worked with the Minnesota Service Cooperatives where I met up with him annually as SelectAccount supported their VEBA administration. The Hammerstad family should be very proud of what Virgil contributed to Health Care. He will be missed and remembered. RIP Virgil.

    • Sympathy to you, Connie and your girls and families. I remember how much Carol loved Virgil and you and your families. I know Carol would be grieving with you …all our friends in the old birthday club are gone..Keep those memories close…..

    • Sorry to learn that Virgil has passed away.

Virgil hired me at BC-BS in 1983. We had a great working relationship and I enjoyed working with Virgil. He truly was an innovator, he single-handedly made Aware Gold a mainstay in the BC-BS healthcare plans.

I always appreciated the fact that he let me manage the sales department without any interference from him. He placed a lot of trust in those who worked with and for him.

Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

    • So sad to read of Virgil’s passing. He was well loved at BCBSMN. He treated everyone so respectfully and was an encouraging influence on so many people. Prayers for all his family and loved ones. I

    • Virgil will be missed by many. He was a kind and humble soul with a heart of gold. I cherish the time I had to work with him. He was a good mentor and friend. He will forever hold a special place in my heart. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this most difficult time. May the memories you shared and knowing many share your loss bring you peace. He would not have wanted you to see him suffer. I am sorry I cannot be there in person to celebrate his life but I will be there in spirit.
