Wallace “Wally” Shefland

Wallace “Wally” Shefland, age 84 of Baldwin, passed away on October 30, 2017, at the United Hospital in St. Paul surrounded by his family. Wally was born in Woodville on October 3, 1933, the son of Malford and Florence (Delander) Shefland. He was raised in Woodville where he graduated from Woodville High School. He enlisted in the United States Armed Forces and served as a member of United States Army during the Korean War. On September 21, 1957, Wally was united in marriage to Mae Delores Anderson at Zion Lutheran Church in Woodville, WI. This union would be blessed with three daughters Debbie, Sherry, and Brenda. Wally and Mae founded Shefland Trucking Service in 1954; their diligence and motivation allowed them to run their own business for many years. Wally was a true entrepreneur. He owned and operated the Baldwin Sports Center and Wally’s Service Station, as well as his very own cattle-hauling service for many years. He enjoyed his numerous trips delivering cattle to South Saint Paul, where he also developed long-lasting friendships with a variety of farmers.

Wally was a firm believer in doing things “Wally’s Way, Or the Highway.” He possessed a meticulous attention to details and an unshakable determination to do the job the right way; his expressionless sense of humor throughout the years has led to a very long list of quotes, stories, and one-liners that his operations manager, Austin, has affectionately named: “Wally-isms.”

Wally had an unquestionable love for his business and his work, but his family always came first. He thoroughly enjoyed the long, eventful travels that would take place each year with his family to various places throughout the country. Wally was exceptionally proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; he appreciated each and every moment with his wife, Mae, until her passing in April of 1998.

Wally will remain in the hearts of his children, Debbie (Doug) Monicken, Sherry (Gary) Boldt, Brenda (Rick) Wynveen; grandchildren, Kyle (Gina) Monicken, Tara (Kevin) Nelson and Julia (Kyle) Miller, Derek (Alicia) Boldt and Aaron (Bailey) Boldt, as well as Morgan, Cole and Makenna Wynveen; great-grandchildren, Luke and Ava Monicken, Mason and Brody Miller; siblings, Dorothy (Bob) Larson, Shirley Goossen, and Betty Johnson; as well as many other relatives and close friends. The family would also like to extend their gratitude to Austin Nichols, Pam O’Keefe, as well as the many drivers of STS for their many years of dedication and contributions to Wally’s business.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae, in 1998; an infant daughter Linda; sister, Donna Mae (Howard) Schoonover; brothers-in-law, Ron Goossen and Alvin Johnson.

Funeral service for Wally will be 11AM Saturday November 4th at Zion Lutheran Church in Woodville. Visitation will be on Friday from 3pm to 8pm at Zion Lutheran Church, as well as one hour prior to the funeral service Saturday. Burial will be in the Sunset Cemetery in Woodville. Memorials are preferred to the discretion of the family. Funeral services entrusted to the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Baldwin.
