William Hartfield

William J. “Bill” Hartfield, age 79, of Hudson, passed peacefully on the evening of April 12, 2013, at the Hudson Hospital, surrounded by his family.  Bill was born on March 30, 1934 to Henry and Alice Hartfield in Elmwood, WI.  After graduating high school, Bill enlisted in the US Navy, where he served on various destroyers during the Korean War.  Upon his return from the Navy, Bill was united in marriage to Jean Loer.  The union was blessed with six children; Julie, Jeff, Susan, Barbara, Paul and Amy.  Bill worked for the Armour Meat Company for 40+ years.  Upon retirement, he and Jean settled on a lake near Centuria, WI.  At the time that he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, the two moved to Hudson, WI to be closer to family.

Prior to Bill’s illness, he was an avid deer hunter, skilled with both rifle and crossbow.  Bill and Jean often travelled together.  They enjoyed trips to Hawaii, New Mexico, California, and many other cross-country destinations.  Often, you could find Bill enjoying time with friends and family at the horse track and the casino.  His favorite times were those spent with his family and he was always up for a game of euchre. 

Bill is survived by his: wife of 57 years, Jean; children, Julie (Delbert) Dodge of River Falls, Jeffrey (Toni) Hartfield of Red Wing, MN, Susan (Randy) Lucas of Nora Springs, IA, Barbara Anderson of New Richmond, WI, Paul (Renee) Hartfield of River Falls, WI and Amy Peters of Forest Lake, MN; 22 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Elizabeth “Betty” Anderson of Hager City, WI, Terri (Cal) Landry of Ellsworth, WI and Trudi (Dennis) Owen of Ellsworth, WI and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, infant brother, Robert and brother-in-law, Jim Anderson.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at 4pm on Wednesday, April 17 at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home – Hudson chapel.  Military honors will be provided by members of the Hudson American Legion and VFW.  A reception will be held after the service until 8pm.  Services are in the care of the O’Connell Family Funeral Home – Hudson chapel.  715.386.3725
