Mary Ann Elizabeth Briles (Schweitzer)

Age 88, of River Falls, WI left this world December 18, 2013, and entered heaven. She died from heart and lung problems at the Christian Community Nursing Home in Hudson, where she had lived for 4 years.Mary Ann was born May 13, 1925 in Minneapolis, MN, to Henry and Eva (Walker) Schweitzer, Sr. the first of three children. She grew up during the depression and knew the value of hard work and the dollar. She helped raise her two brothers, after her dad died, so her mother could work. They didn’t always like to listen to their big sister. She was a graduate of Wayzata High School in 1941, but was unable to attend her graduation exercises since her brother gave her the mumps. Mary Ann worked at the ammunition’s plant for a year and half during the war. She attended Franklin Nursing School in Minneapolis and graduated in 1944 with her LPN degree. She enjoyed her work as a nurse and especially with polio children.Hank, one of her brothers, introduced her to Donald O. Briles whom she married on April 30, 1955. They were blessed with three children, Theresa, Michael and Phyllis. They farmed in rural River Falls. Mary Ann worked at the River Falls City Hospital and later at various nursing homes. She was active with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts with her children. She always made sure the kids had presents and treats for Christmas and special moments for their birthdays and feast days. The hardest things in her life were taking care of her mom and dad during their dying process and watching her son lose his battle with cancer.Mary Ann was a fighter in any illness she had. She was a devout Catholic and wore her prayer book thin along with her rosary beads. She was a tremendous giver (always baking treats for others), a helper at Second and Forth banquets, driver for Meals on Wheels and taking people to appointments, working at funerals and so much more. MaryAnn loved to travel, especially to Florida with Theresa. She had a tough shell but in later years let it cracker through to a softer side. She was a strict parent which made her kids into better adults. She is survived by her daughters: Theresa “Terri” Briles of Shoreview, MN, Phyllis Briles (husband Keith Lammers) of Le Sueur, MN; grandchildren, Michael Aaron (Jennifer) Briles of Chicago, Melissa Briles of Oregon, WI, Joshua Briles of Baldwin, WI, great-grandson Oliver Edward Briles.
