Stanley Earl Sobottka

In Memory of Stanley E. SobottkaProfessor Emeritus in PhysicsUniversity of Virginia Dr. Stanley E. Sobottka, age 83, of Temecula, CA, died on April 16, 2014 at the Murrieta Health and Rehabilitation Center in Murrieta, CA.Stanley was born at home on December 20, 1930 to Henry and Frieda (Kaempf) Sobottka in Plum City, WI. The third of nine children, Stanley grew up on his family farm in Plum City. He graduated from Ellsworth High School, WI, in 1948. He honorably served in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Electronics Technician First Class from 1948-1952. He then majored in Physics at University of Wisconsin, Madison and graduated from that institution within 33 months in 1955. He next attended Stanford University, where he obtained his Master’s and then his PhD in Physics in 1960.Upon graduation, he worked as a member of the technical staff, first at Boeing Scientific Research Labs, and then at Watkins-Johnson, before becoming a member of the Physics faculty at the University of Virginia. While at UVA, he focused on high energy nuclear physics, x-ray crystallography, and in later years, the relationship between Consciousness and Physics. He retired from UVA as a Professor Emeritus of Physics in January 1996.Stanley enjoyed hiking, travel, spending time with his family and friends, reading, and square dancing. He was an active seeker spiritually and, in 2011, moved to Temecula, CA to further his pursuits in this regard.Stanley is survived by his three children: Daniel (Medora) Sobottka of Davis, CA; Elizabeth (Dr. Darrick E.) Antell of Greenwich, CT; and Laura (Gary) Schifris of Ra’anana, Israel. He has 8 grandchildren, one of whom currently is a student at the University of Virginia.He is also survived by 7 of his brothers and sisters: Dale (Joyce) Sobottka, Carol (Burt) Huneke, Roger (Yvonne) Sobottka, Shirley Dodds, Ellen (Gene) Kirchner, Joyce Hawke, Jane (Jack) Terpstra, and Tom (Jane) Wider. Stanley is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Freida (Kempf) Sobottka and his brother, David (Velma) Sobottka of Roberts, WI.A Celebration of Stanley’s life was held at a private home in the hills surrounding Temecula on April 24, 2014.Another Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 25 at 5:00pm at The Haven, 112 West Market Street, Charlottesville, Virginia.
