Elwood Vernon Eccles

Elwood Vernon Eccles, age 94 passed away Friday, November 7, 2014 at the Plum City Care Center.Elwood was born on July 19, 1920 in St. John’s, Nova Scotia, Canada to Mildred(Longmire) and Charles Eccles. He is the third child of six children. He moved to the US when he was 2 years old and at the age of 8 gained his US Citizenship in MassachusettsElwood graduated in 1939 from Waltham,Massachusetts High School. He entered U.S. Army August 26, 1942 and was in the 654 Squardron as a 1st grade topographical Technician and was honorablly discharged from the Army November 8, 1945Elwood was united in marriage to Maxine Metcalf on November 16, 1945 at South Post, Ft. Meyers, Va. They made home in Waltham, Massachusetts where he was a carpenter. They returned to Plum City in 1948 where they have resided ever since. Elwood bought the Plum City Feed Mill from Maxine’s father and operated until 1986 when he retired.Elwood love to golf(second occupation), fish, boat, spend time with family, travel, play cards, bowl, avid hunter,watch sports on TV and drive Maxine to all her meetings.Elwood was active in Plum City Lion’s Club, joined the fire department in 1948 and had 30 years as Fire Chief of the Plum City/Town of Union Fire Department, member of American Legion, remodeled classroom-help build the convent-rectory at St. John in Plum City and gave blood anytime to blue babies in Plum City Hospital.Elwood is survived by 5 children: Diane(Kent) Gilles, Plum City, WI.; Lalia(James) Martin, Maiden Rock, WI; Roland(Pamela) Eccles, Plum City, WI; Eloise(Billy) Catrett, Santa Fe, TX; Laurence(Gwen) Eccles, Arkansaw, WI.14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren with twins on the way. Brinley Rose Klinski arrived to parents Kelsey/Tim Klinski, 15 minutes before Elwood left to join Maxine, he just needed to make sure she arrived safely.He is survived by a sister Helen Olney, Washington State; by a twins brother(Thelbert)and sister(Thelma Arsenault) of Massachusett and many relatives and friends.Preceding him in death was his wife, Maxine(9-29-14) his brother,George and sister,Audrey Bonnie and grandson in law Matthew Druppel.Military honors by the veterans of Legion Post 365-Plum City will take place at the funeral home following the service.Memorial are preferred to Frank Gilles American Legion Post #365, P.0.
