David Donald Levenhagen

David Donald Levenhagen was born on May 20, 1936, at the family home in Monona, Iowa, the son of Frederick and Clara. He passed away at home in Ellsworth on January 11, 2016, at the age of 79.

David spent his early years in Iowa. At the age of ten his family moved to a farm in Northwestern Minnesota, where he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his eight brothers and sisters. He joined the Navy as a young man and served on the USS Grand Canyon. David married Margaret Shonyo in St. Paul on May 24, 1969, beginning a 46-year partnership of love and friendship. They built a home near Ellsworth, Wisconsin where they raised their two sons. David was a metal fabricator by trade, but his greatest loves were farming, gardening, and woodworking. He had a great love of animals and was a keen observer of nature. His artistic touch could be seen in everything from his gardens to his apple orchards; from his stained glass work to his beautiful oak furniture—treasures that will be handed down for generations. Throughout his life he enjoyed music and dancing, planting a love of the arts for his sons that continues to bloom in his grandchildren.

David is survived by his wife Margaret of Ellsworth, WI, his two sons Brad (Britta) Levenhagen of Lake Elmo, MN, Jason (Denise) Levenhagen of Central City, IA; his four grandchildren, Spencer, Berit, Jude, and Aubben; siblings Frederick (Mary), Willard (Violet), June (David); and many nieces and nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Charles, Palmer, Gerhardt, and sisters Florence and Ruth.
