Vincent D. ‘Vince’ Tubman

Vincent David “Vince” Tubman, age 83 of Hammond WI and formerly of Brooklyn Center MN, died on Sunday, February 26, 2012 at the Baldwin Area Medical Center. Vince was born July 1, 1928 in River Falls WI to parents Herbert D. and Agnes C. (Goodell) Tubman. Vince attended the Hammond Central Rural School, until the death of his father the day after Christmas while in the first grade. At that time, Vince transferred to Hammond Elementary. He went on to graduate from Hammond High School with the Class of 1946. Vince was united in marriage to Jean Owens on June 4, 1950 at the North Rush River Lutheran Church. Their union in marriage was blessed with four children.

Vince furthered his education at the University of Wisconsin at River Falls through the fall of 1949, working summers at the St. Croix County Highway Department. He left college in 1949 to work for the Electric Auto Lite Co of LaCrosse WI in cost accounting, and graduated from University of Wisconsin at River Falls in 1952.  In 1956, Vince left Auto Lite to teach science at Pepin High School, Pepin WI. During this time, he earned his masters degree from University of Wisconsin at Madison, and in 1960, moved to Hibbing MN to teach high school chemistry. After four years at Hibbing, Vince moved to Brooklyn Center MN, where he taught science and math for 26 years until his retirement in 1990. During his teaching career, Vince also taught Drivers education, and served as a basketball coach. Vince also instructed summer schools for high school chemistry teachers in Bophal, India and at the University of Maryland.

Vince was named Teacher of the Year, as well as Outstanding Citizen of the Year in Brooklyn Center MN in 1977, earned the 1980 Brooklyn Center High School Spectator Award, and the 1984 Community Service Award. Vince was also appointed to the Hennepin County Personnel Board from 1986-1992. In 2005, Vince also was named the Volunteer of the Year Award during Heartland Days. Vince earned numerous accomplishments throughout his career, and being a loving husband, father, and grandfather were among his greatest accomplishments. Vince also loved to camp, and taking his grandchildren camping was a highlight of his. Vince also followed Minnesota Golden Gopher basketball, and was a season ticket holder for over 37 years. Whether in the woods trimming trees on his land, or being the scientist out researching pine beetles, performing updates and repairs on his rental properties, or always volunteering, Vince knew how to stay busy. Vince will be remembered for his love of family, and service to others.

Vince is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Jean; sons Michael (Christine) of Wisconsin Dells WI, and Mark (Carolyn) of Onalaska WI; daughters, Linda (Dave) Lindquist of Glenwood City WI, and Bethany (Keith) Johs of West Fargo ND; eleven grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Alan (Jeanne) Owens of Hammond, and Frederic (Christa) Owens of West Des Moines, IA; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Vince was preceded in death by his father Herbert in 1934; mother Agnes in 1968; sisters Norma and Catherine; brothers Lawrence, Wilbur, Jim, and LaMoine; and brother-in-law, Orville Owens.

Funeral Services for Vincent Tubman will be held at 11:00AM on Friday, March 2, 2012 at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Hammond WI, with Pastor Michael Briggs officiating. Burial will follow in the Hammond Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at church, and also from 4:00-8:00PM on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Baldwin WI. Memorials are preferred to the Trinity Lutheran Church, and will be used in honor of Vince for their Education Ministry.
