Gladys M. Bonte

Gladys Marguret Bonte, age 90, of Baldwin, formerly of Glenwood City, passed away on Sunday July 7, 2013 at Comforts of Home in Baldwin.  Gladys was born on April 22, 1923 in Hawkins, WI to Ferdinand and Christine (Lebal) Hammersmith. She attended Hawkins Road School and graduated from Hawkins High School. Following her graduation, she attended Rusk County Normal and River Falls College, obtaining a degree in Elementary Education.  On May 26, 1948, she was united in marriage to James Francis Bonte at St. John’s Catholic Church in Glenwood City, WI. Their marriage would be blessed with three children: James Axel Jr “Jimmy”, Joanne Marie, and Jacqueline Kay “Jackie”.

Gladys thoroughly enjoyed her time as an elementary educator, teaching children at the Pioneer School in Glen Flora, WI, Emerald Valley School, Wilson Grade School, Bell School, Happy Valley School, Ridgeview School, Camp Nine, and Glenwood City Schools. She had fond memories of her time teaching in a one room school in the country. Aside from her career, she enjoyed scrapbooking, tending to her house plants, and spending time with her family and friends. 

She is survived by her children: Jimmy (Linda) Bonte of Hammond, WI, Joanne Bonte of New Richmond, WI, and Jackie (Robert) Aune of Hammond, WI; grandchildren: Greg Bonte of New Richmond, Cory Bonte (Tony DeGross) of St. Paul, Amy (Tom Jr.) Peterson of Hudson, Andrea (Tom) VanSomeren of Amery, WI, Brandy Olson of Hammond, WI, Kurtis (Becca) Olson of Hammond, WI, Whitney Aune of Hammond, WI, and Alex Aune of Hammond, WI; great-grandchildren: Ashley, Hannah, and Jenna VanSomeren, Mya Kizer, and Jocelyn Hjelmgren. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband James, sister Alice (Ivan) Rurup, and her brother Lawrence Hammersmith.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11AM on Friday, July 12 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 1295 Ridgeway St., in Hammond, WI. Interment at the St. Mary’s church cemetery with casketbearers being Cory Bonte, Kurtis Olson, Alex Aune, Terry Richards, Eddie Rurup, and Stacey Goossens. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4PM to 7PM with a prayer service at 7PM at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Baldwin as well as one hour prior to the mass at church on Friday morning. Memorials are preferred.
