Thor Aune

Thor Aune, age 80 of Hammond died peacefully Saturday, August 18th at his home. Thor was born March 16, 1938 in Baldwin to Arthur and Blanche (Boucher) Aune. He attended Liberty Elementary prior to graduating from Baldwin High School. He enlisted in the armed forces, joining the Army and serving in the Berlin Crisis of 1961. He began his career working for New Richmond Plumbing and Heating. His father founded Aune Pump Service in 1946. As business grew, they reorganized purchasing a well truck with a drill. Aune Well Drilling was thus established in 1980. Thor married Karen Johnson on June 29, 1963 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hudson. This union was blessed with a son, Robert and daughter, Christine. Most recently they celebrated 55 years. Thor’s dedication to his work was unparalleled. Whether weekends and holidays or inclement weather, he always put his customers first and foremost. He respected his job, but when he wasn’t working he loved to root for the Packers and spend time with his family at the cabin on Lake Sylvan fishing and playing cards (Euchre). He was also a deer hunter and snowmobiler, belonging to the Snowdrifters Club of Hammond. Earlier he enjoyed golfing at the Hammond Golf Club and bowling. He also took pleasure in keeping the yard maintained and his vegetable garden weeded. His sweet corn was his favorite.   

Thor will remain in the hearts of his wife of 55 years Karen; children Robert (Jackie) Aune and Daughter Christine Aune; grandchildren Whitney (Dillon) Aune-Orf, Alex Aune; Brandy (Bruce) Olson, Kurtis Olson; Great grandchildren Caleb Olson, Jocelyn Hjelmgren, Avery Olson, and Gavin Orf ; sisters Bernice (Bill) Giefer, Arlis Johnson; brother Gene (Audrey) Aune; sisters and brothers-in-law Dorothy Johnson, Cathy (Howard) Witham and Marilyn (Dan) Kay. Thor is preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Blanche (Boucher) Aune; his stillborn twins; a stillborn grandchild; father and mother-in-law Bernard and Marie Johnson; sisters June (Robert) Hedin, Twila (Donald) Martin and Mary (James) Allen; brother-in-laws Donald Johnson and Ken Johnson; nieces Debbie Johnson Lindstrom and Kim Allen Brown  

Mass of Christian Burial for Thor Aune will be 11AM Thursday, August 23rd at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hammond. Burial with full military honors will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday August 22 from 4pm to 7pm with a prayer service at 7pm at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Baldwin as well as one hour prior to the mass at church on Thursday morning. Memorials preferred to the discretion of the family and Western Wisconsin Health Cardiac Unit.
