Clairbel “Cubby” Halvorson

Clairbel “Cubby” Halvorson, age 85, of Hudson, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, March 4, 2011. She was born on April 25, 1925 to John Wallace and Vera (Powell) Clair in Anoka, MN. She was raised in Hudson, where she graduated from high school in 1943. She then went to work as a bookkeeper at the First National Bank. On October 7, 1948 Clairbel was united in marriage to Roger H. Halvorson at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Clairbel and Roger would be blessed with five children: Leif, Maren, Erik, Rolf, and Karl. Until 1970 they were the owners and operators of the Halvorson Variety Store on Main Street in Hudson. Clairbel subsequently worked at St. Paul Book and Stationery until her retirement. Cubby and Roger also contributed their varietal grapes and time to the wine co-operative, Northern Vineyards, of Stillwater, MN, of which they were founding members.

Cubby was active in Scouting, serving as a Den Mother for many years. She loved to read, especially about Hudson and American history. She loved to tell family stories, especially about growing up in Hudson. She loved to camp, canoe, and sing with her family. She loved to pull back the rug and dance with Roger and their children. She loved to cook. She always set a beautiful table for friends and family. Cubby loved to watch movies, old and new. Most of all, she loved her family, her friends, her home on 12th Street, her faith in God, and her church, St. Paul’s Episcopal. Her joyful laughter and positive, warm, friendly spirit will be missed by all who knew her.

Clairbel was preceded in death by her husband, Roger; her son, Leif; her sister, Margaret Mullen; and her brother, John Wallace II. Cubby will remain in the hearts of her daughter, Maren Halvorson of North Carolina; her three sons: Erik Halvorson and his wife, Su, of New York; Rolf Halvorson of Hudson; and Karl Halvorson of Ohio; her daughter-in-law Joyce Pointe; her three grandchildren: Odin Halvorson of California, Anna Clair Miller of North Carolina, and Henry Halvorson of Ohio; and her extended family and friends. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of Christian Community Home for the loving care they showed Cubby throughout the past year.

A memorial service will be held for Clairbel at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 11th at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 502 County Road UU, Hudson. Visitation will be at the church during the hour preceding the service. Cubby will be interred at Willow River Cemetery in Hudson. Memorials may be directed to the Christian Community Home of Hudson. Services have been entrusted to the O’Connell Family Funeral Home and Countryside Crematory, 715-386-3725.
