Evelyn A. Monsen

On Sunday, June 21, 2015, Evelyn Alice Monsen passed away peacefully at home after almost 91 years of a full and happy life.  Evelyn was the oldest child of Martin and Alice Monsen and the older sibling to Edward and Harriet.  Evelyn, while never married, was always with her family, whether with her parents and sister or nephews Frank (Bud) and Edward Spevak and their families.  She was affectionately called “Auntie” by many, because that is what her nephews called her.  For many years she was the family chauffeur either visiting relatives all around Chicago, Wisconsin, and Indiana or on family vacations to Colorado, Texas, or Florida.  One of her favorite travel memories was her trip to Sweden with her best friend Norma to visit relatives in the “old country”’.

When her nephews moved to different parts of the United States she moved from the family home in Oak Park, just outside Chicago, to live with Frank and his family in Minnesota.  Over the last several years she enjoyed spending the day with her friend Joyce and going to the casino on the bus.  Not that she hit the jackpot but she always came home after a nice day of conversation and a meal with at least $5 more than when she left.

Evelyn worked to expand her friendships by being a Princess of Mat-Sha Temple No. 62, Daughters of the Nile.  She even took a couple of appointive officer positions with the order.  She always enjoyed a meal and conversation either at home with family or out and about at a restaurant or function with friends and family.

Evelyn Alice Monsen born August 25, 1924.  Preceded in death by father Martin and mother Alice (Swanson) and brother Edward and sister Harriet (Spevak).  Survived by nephews Frank (wife Joan) and Edward (wife Mary) Spevak.  Also survived by grand nephews and nieces Christopher, Katherine, Marianne and Frank IV.

Memorials in lieu of flowers to the Daughters of the Nile Foundation, www.donfdn.org, or Shriners Hospitals for Children-Twin Cities, www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org.

A memorial service will be held at a date and place to be announced.
