Gordon Meeker

Gordon Faxon Meeker was born June 19, 1923 in Pipestone, Minnesota, to Milo and Bernice Meeker. When he was 14, he moved with his family to St. Paul, where he attended Central High School, graduating in 1941.  He attended Macalester College until 1943, when he entered the Navy.  He served in the Pacific at Okinawa until he left the service in 1946.  He returned to Macalester College, graduating in 1947.

He worked for GE Supply Co. for a few years before he went to work at Minnesota Mutual Life Insurance Co.  He retired at age 65, after 37 years at Minnesota Mutual.

Gordon was involved in several community organizations.  He served as a board member and officer for more than 15 years for the Snelling Hamline Community. For over 25 years he was a coach, team manager, board member and officer of the Highland Central Hockey Association. For more than 70 years he was involved with the Boy Scouts.  He started at age 9 as a Scout, and in later years served as a Den Leader, Scout Master, Explorer Advisor, and Merit Badge Counselor. He was active in his church up until the time of his passing, serving in several capacities on various boards and teaching Sunday School.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, H. Jay Meeker.  He is survived by nieces Peggy Johnson, Jane Meeker and Joan Prescott, 5 great nephews, one great niece, and many other family members and friends.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 7th at Macalester Plymouth United Church; 1658 Lincoln Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55105. Burial with full military honors is in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery. To honor Gordon’s dedication to the Boy Scouts, memorials may be directed to Pine Bend Scout Club Foundation, PBSCF C/O Mark Nelson, 1094 Winthrop Street S., St Paul, MN  55119.
