Jackie Myhre

Jackie was born on April 12, 1927 in Elwood, Nebraska to Glen and Evelyn Hill. At five years of age, she, her parents and three siblings Jerry (8), Jean (3), and Janice (2) moved to Arapahoe, Nebraska. Jackie attended Arapahoe High School from kindergarten through graduation from twelfth grade in 1945. She excelled academically and participated in all school activities: band, glee club, and was a choir leader. She was once honored to be chosen as May Queen at the annual May Fest. Thereafter, Jackie, her mother and sisters moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where she attended the University of Nebraska, graduating in 1949 with a degree in Elementary Education.

While singing in the 1st Presbyterian Church choir with her mother and sisters, she met her future husband, Lee Myhre, a veteran of World War II who had returned home to Nebraska, and was also attending U of N at Lincoln. They were married on June 10, 1951 and made their first home in Omaha. Prior to their marriage, Jackie had taught in Lincoln and was also teaching in Omaha before Lee’s job required a move to Kalamazoo, Michigan. There, Jackie continued teaching kindergarten, and earned her Masters in Speech Correction from Western Michigan University.

In 1958, their daughter Jenifer was born, and in 1959 they moved to Anaheim, California. In 1967, their son Chris was born and that same year they made a short move to Orange, California.

All of that time, Jackie was teaching in Anaheim. Though she taught 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th grades at times during her career, she mostly taught kindergarten. She taught the final 26 years of that 51 year career at Sunkist Elementary School in Anaheim, CA, retiring in 2000 at the age of 73. Even after retirement, she continued to serve the young as a volunteer at the Sunkist School, and the St. Jude Medical Center.

Throughout their time in California, Jackie and Lee were active in the 1st Presbyterian Church of Anaheim, singing in the choir, serving as Elders, and teaching. Jackie and Lee loved to dance and spent much of their time in retirement dancing the night away at their favorite spots. They also loved to travel and saw much of the world on a variety of cruises. In 2016, with Lee’s health failing, Jackie and Lee moved to Hudson, WI to be close to family.

Jackie passed peacefully in her sleep on the morning of November 1st, 2022, just as she had desired. She is preceded in death by her brother Jerry, sister Janice, mother Evelyn and husband Lee. She is survived by her daughter Jenifer, son Chris, son-in-law Brad, daughter-in-law Brandie; grandchildren Arah, Lindsey, Hollis and Bradley; great-grandchildren Johnny, Elin, Ellis, Ryder, Carson, Cameron, Case, Capri, and Etta.

A Memorial Service for Jackie will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at the O’Connell Funeral Home, 520 S. 11th St., Hudson. The service will be livestreamed – click HERE for the livestream. Private family burial will be held at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery with her husband Lee.
