Don Bauer

Born in St. Peter,MN to Fred and Dorothea Bauer, on Dec. 20, 1933, Don passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in rural Prescott,WI Feb. 6, 2019. A unique man of intelligence, humor, spirituality and kindness, Don was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, friend and counselor. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Joicelyn Kirchhoff Bauer, brother Frederick and sister Dorothy Kahle. He is survived by his loving wife, Naren Canty Bauer, whom he adored for 45 years, and children Randy (Debbie O’Leary) Bauer, Granger,IA; Sue (David) Skarolid, Brooklyn Park; Leann (Prabhaker Devavaram) Canty, Jamaica Plain,MA; Leslee (Todd) Canty-Noyes, Orono,ME; and 8 amazing grandchildren. Also survived by sisters Mary Brandt, Gaylord, and Evelyn McCabe, Sacramento,CA; brother Leo (Diane) Bauer, Darwin,MN; sister-in-law Jackie Hulbert, Fridley; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Don grew up on the family farm in Gaylord, graduated from Gaylord High School in 1951, and then went on to graduate from Gustavus Adolphus College. He was an instructor for the Guided Missiles Dept. in the U.S. Army for 2 years, and graduated with a MA in Industrial Relations at the U of MN. Over the years, Don worked in Human Relations for Queen Products in Albert Lea, Sun Newspapers in the Twin Cities, Personnel Director for the St. Paul Pioneer Press/Dispatch and in 1976 moved to FMC Corp. in Fridley as the Director of Human Resources. He served with the Twin City Area Labor Management Council and the Industrial Relations Advisory Council, and continued to volunteer at his church, Emma Norton Services and as treasurer in his new community. Don always enjoyed his work life, but loved his family deeply and found time for all of their activities, including extensive traveling. Don and Naren especially enjoyed taking each grandchild on a special trip the year they turned 10. In 2003, Don and Naren moved from Mendota Heights into a new home on the bluffs of the Mississippi River in rural Prescott where Don continued his love of gardening. For several summers, he acted in Prescott summer theater. A Memorial Service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, at Fairmount Ave. United Methodist Church, 1523 Fairmount Ave., St. Paul. Visitation will take place at the Church from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. before the Service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Fairmount Ave. United Methodist Church Congregational Endowment Fund, The International Rescue Committee or Doctors Without Borders.
