Edwin Henning

Edwin E. Henning, 68, died Saturday, August 22, 2020, at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota. He died from complications related to his long battle with stage 4 lung cancer which metastasized to his liver. He had previously survived a bout of head/neck cancer.

Edwin, son of Pearl and Charles Henning of Prescott, Wisconsin, was born in Joliet, Illinois, on November 13, 1951, and was currently living in Hudson, Wisconsin.

He is survived by his brother Charles (Sue), his sister Charlotte Kodner (Eric), brother-in-law Jon Retterath, four nieces—Margaret Whipple, Breanne Weir, Laura Kodner and Eve Wolfe, one nephew—Jeremy Retterath, one great-nephew and three great-nieces.

Edwin was preceded in death by his parents Pearl and Charles Henning (long-term residents of Prescott) and his sister Sally Retterath.

Ed grew up in Prescott was confirmed through the United Church of Christ and was a 1970 graduate of Prescott High School. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire for one year. His favorite class was a communications class where he was the host of his own weekly radio show. Not surprising as when he was growing up he would walk around with a cassette tape recorder interviewing “the man on the street.”

Ed had a variety of jobs over the years and was basically a carpenter by trade. One of his favorite projects was in the mid-sixties. He was on the original crew that built Kings Cove, which is a marina just off the main channel of the Mississippi River right above the mouth of the St. Croix River called Lake Conley, Hastings, Minnesota.

His favorite pastimes included spending time up North and fishing. His passions were his TR 3’s (Triumph automobiles) and his Austen Healey. His one brush with fame was connected to the Children’s Day Celebration in Prescott. One year he found the hidden medallion under the swinging gate on the school playground.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic there will not be a formal funeral or visitation. Family members will attend his internment at Pine Glen Cemetery in Prescott, Wisconsin.
