Madolyn Lee Vier of Baldwin, Wisconsin, died peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving husband and children on June 9, 2016 at the age of 78.
Madolyn was born on November 30th, 1937 in Baldwin, WI, to parents Carroll and Myrtle (Thompson) Gaustad. She grew up in Baldwin where she graduated from Baldwin High School in 1955. Madolyn met the love of her life, Laurence Vier, at a dance held at the Wilson Nightclub. The couple united their marriage on November 26th, 1955, at Peace Lutheran Church in Baldwin. They were blessed with seven beautiful children and made homes in Hammond, St. Croix Beach MN, and Hudson before finally settling down in Baldwin in 1971. Madolyn was a caring mother in a busy home and worked hard to raise all of her children, as well as all of the neighborhood kids they brought home. She took a job at the Northside Café for many years as a waitress and cook, before purchasing the café with her husband in 1987. The couple owned and operated the restaurant, where they could be found joking and laughing together for ten years before fully retiring.
Madolyn delighted in having a good time with her friends and family, and was especially entertained by her grandchildren. She was fond of road trips with her husband across the United States, especially Lake Superior, as well as traveling overseas to visit Europe. Madolyn was an exceptional cook and was known for her famous potato salad. She also loved baking pies and cookies; often sending bags of freshly made cookies home with family and friends.
Madolyn is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Laurence Vier; seven children, Linda (Tom Fenton) Peterson of Somerset, Greg (Anke) Vier of Hudson, Gary (Pam) Vier of Hudson, Doug (Linda) Vier of Palmer Lake CO, Lori (Ted) Dutcher of Centerville UT, Karen (Bruce) Diamond of Menomonie, and Kay (Dave) Anderson of New Richmond; twenty grandchildren, Justin, Brock and Brady Peterson; Jennifer (Dan) Freeman, and Barbara (Cliff) Gustafson; Britnie (Paul) Bierbrauer, and Boudy (Tiffany) Vier; Melissa (George) Burke, Ryan (Megan) Vier, Elise (Justin) Palmer, and Kristian Price; Andrew (Shelly) McDonald, Catharine and Samantha Dutcher; Karie (Mike) Morgen, Jeremiah and Joshua Diamond; Sarah and Matthew Hawkins, John (Theresa) Anderson, and Mica Anderson; 17 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson; siblings, Marlys DeSmith, Charlene Snyder, Diane Jeske, Janice Knipfel, Carolyn (Stanley) Hanson, and Thomas (Sandy) Gaustad; brother-in-law, Barry Moran; sisters-in-law Dorothy (Harold) Bishop and Anna (Bob) Schuett; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; granddaughter, Brea Vier; siblings, Rosalie Moran, Phyllis Raehsler, and Peter Gaustad; brothers-in-law, Rodney DeSmith, David Snyder, Bernie Jeske, and George Knipfel.
A gathering of family and friends honoring the life of Madolyn Vier will be held from 2:00-5:00pm on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home, 1010 Newton Street in Baldwin, WI. A graveside service will follow at the Hammond Cemetery in Hammond, WI.
