Kenneth Van Someren

Kenneth Dale Van Someren, “Kenny the Barber,” age 89 of Baldwin, passed away July 4, 2017 at the Baldwin Care Center.  Kenneth was born June 20, 1928 in Baldwin to Joseph and Mabel (Lund) Van Someren.  He proudly served his country in the United States Army.  Kenny was united in marriage on May 29, 1954 to Lois Mae Johnson.  Their marriage was blessed with three children:  Linda, Randy and Karen.  Kenny served his community well, owning and operating Kenny’s Barbershop in Baldwin for 59 years.

Outside of his work as a barber, Kenny enjoyed carpentry work with George Hop, and was skilled in refinishing furniture.  In years past, he took great delight shaking dice at Barks Bakery for coffee with friends. He enjoyed dancing, and had cherished memories of his first date with Lois dancing to the Whoopee John band.  Kenneth was fond of his time fishing at their lake place on Wapogasset.  His love for the outdoors continued in his time hunting and snowmobiling.  Lois and Kenny were fortunate to share many travels together, with some of their favorite destinations being the East Coast, Canada, and Montana.

Kenny will remain in the hearts of his wife of 63 years, Lois; daughters, Linda (Kevin) Booth of Baldwin and Karen McCray of Baldwin; grandchildren:  Morgan (Mike) Lee, Brandon (fiancé, Emily Gantz) Van Someren, MacKenzie (Jacob) Mygatt, Erin (Jacob Bratten) Booth, Kayla Van Someren, Tanner Booth, Olivia Booth, and Alex McCray; great-grandchildren:  Montino Carothers, Grace Van Someren, Esmee Lee and Zion Mygatt; siblings:  Ruthie TeGrootenhuis, Nancy Roach, Shirley (Ronald) Stone, Mary (Gene) Bonnes and Ronald (Alta) Van Someren; sister-in-law, Winnie Van Someren; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  

He was preceded in death by his son, Randy; siblings:  Lyle, Leslie and Robert Van Someren; Pauline (Dale) Holle, Lloyd (Shirley) Van Someren and Joseph Van Someren.

A Memorial Service will be held 12:00 Noon Saturday, July 8 at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 1350 Florence St., Baldwin, with Pastor Paul  Backstrom officiating.  Military honors paying tribute to Kenny’s service to our country will immediately follow the service by the Baldwin Legion Post 240.  A Gathering of Family and Friends will take place from 10:00 am until the time of the service at church.  Interment will take place at the Baldwin Cemetery.  Urn bearers assisting with the services will be:  Brandon Van Someren, Alex McCray, Kevin Booth, Mike Lee, Jacob Mygatt and Jacob Braaten, and honorary urn bearer being Tanner Booth.
