James Ernest Kubiak, age 78 and a proud resident of River Falls, decided on July 23, 2024, that Our House in River Falls would be his final resting place. Born on April 9, 1946, in the bustling metropolis of Antigo, Wisconsin, James, or Big Jim to his friends, was the son of Ernest and Bernice (Walters) Kubiak.
Jim’s early years were filled with two main pursuits: perfecting his polka moves and mastering the art of square dancing. He could cut a rug like nobody’s business, especially if a lively polka tune was playing. When not dazzling folks with his dance skills, Jim spent his free time in and on the water perfecting his water-skiing skills and enjoying his lifelong love of boating and cabin life. Raised on a potato farm with horses, Jim developed a unique relationship with these majestic animals. He taught them tricks, could stand on their backs and participated in numerous horse shows. He took great pride in caring for his horses and even had his horse trailer customized with a hand painted mural of his beloved Arabians Charm and Cherrie.
Jim’s heart was stolen by a feisty redhead from River Falls, Lois Kusilek, who he wisely married on June 18, 1966. Together, they raised three children: James, Anna, and Kimberly, who quickly learned that their dad was not only their biggest cheerleader but also a fearless supporter at every school event, sporting contest and milestone.
His career in the agriculture industry suited him perfectly. Whether selling chemical applications, silos, or farm equipment for big names like John Deere, Case IH or Harvestore -it was apparent you could take the boy off the farm but not the farm out of the man.
Jim was also the proud owner of a 1957 Buick and reserved his Sundays for cheering on the Green Bay Packers. If he wasn’t yelling at the TV, you could find him at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church, where he was an active member and a proud donut maker for Sunday fellowship.
James leaves behind his children James (Sheila) Kubiak Jr., Anna Kohn, and Kim (Layne) Olson; grandchildren Sawyer and Sierra Olson; the extended Kusilek family; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his wife, parents and a stillborn brother.
Join us for a Celebration of Life for both Jim and Lois on Saturday, August 17th, from 1 PM to 4 PM at St. Croix Lanes, 1153 N. St. Croix in River Falls. Memorial and cremation services are entrusted to the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of River Falls. Come help us celebrate the colorful, joyful life of Jim and Lois Kubiak! A special thank you to Our House and Wellhaven for their loving care and support over the past 5 years!
