Earl “Pete” Goodwin, age 92, of Hudson, WI, formerly of Republic, MO, enjoyed his last day, March 6, 2021, surrounded by loved ones at home. He was born on April 16th, 1928 in Springfield, MO to Paul Goodwin and Nora Manis. After graduating from Republic, Missouri High School in 1946, he enrolled at Southwest Missouri State and worked fifty hours a week at a butcher shop to pay tuition and living expenses. He graduated in three years and joined the Army where he was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. During military leave, he enjoyed the hospitality in Copenhagen and skiing in the Alps. After the war, he began a career selling meat and was happiest on the road meeting grocers across the country and striking deals. He rose through the sales ranks and in 1962 he became General Sales Manager for Swift and Co.

He married Betty, his wife of 44 years, in 1977 after a long and storied bachelor life. He declined a corporate transfer to Chicago with Swift and in 1978 established his own wholesale meat business – Twin City Packing Co. His official working hours were 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., Monday to Friday. This left him plenty of time to raise a family and pursue his hobbies. His passion for downhill skiing began with bachelor road trips to Aspen and Crested Butte and continued later in life as he taught his sons to ski. He loved tennis and golf but only on his good days. He was an amateur pilot and frequently flew down to his childhood farm in Missouri.

He was an active local citizen. He served as President of Rotary International South St. Paul (1981), joined the North Hudson Board of Trustees for several years and was a Shriner for 63 years, member of Grand Lodge of Missouri Spirit of St. Louis No. 27 AF and AM; Osman Shrine, and Friendly Valley Shrine. He was also past Director of Royal Order of Jesters St. Paul, Court #9.

In his later years, he enjoyed spoiling his dog, Rocky, and watching the St. Croix River flow by with a whiskey in hand. He befriended many in the community through his membership in the Philosophical Gentleman’s Club and the Hudson Play Reading Group.

He is survived by wife Betty of 44 years, sons Paul (Yuko) Goodwin and Peter Goodwin, stepdaughters Pam Callais and Wendy (Rick) Paulson and several grandchildren. His family is deeply appreciative of all the care and support provided by Minneapolis VA Hospital, Lakeview Hospice and Comfort Keepers.

A visitation for Pete will take place on Tuesday March 16th, 2021 at O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson, WI from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with a prayer service and Masonic service starting at 6:00 p.m., masks are required.

He will be laid to rest next to his father at Brookline Cemetery in Republic, MO. Memorials preferred to Shriners Children’s Hospital (Twin Cities).
