Doris Virginia (Lind) Freeman, age 85 of Baldwin, formerly of St. Paul, passed away peacefully February 14, 2012 at the Baldwin Care Center.  Doris was born on December 21, 1926 in Roberts, WI; the daughter of Harry T. Lind and Florence L. (Bader) Lind.  She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.  Doris worked at Doboy Mills in New Richmond, WI during High School.  She and her twin brother, Donald R. Lind graduated from Baldwin High School in May of 1945.  Their first two years were at the Hammond High School.  Doris decided to forgo two scholarships, one from River Falls State College and the other one at Luther College in Decorah, IA and went to work at F.O.K Hardware (Farwell Ozmun Kirk & Co) in St. Paul.  After working in Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable and the last nine years in advertising and completing 38 years, she retired.  While working in St. Paul, she met and married Dale P. Freeman on June 1, 1960 in the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA.  After retirement, Dale and Doris took up golfing and enjoyed their time together.

She always seemed to be taking lessons and studied throughout her working years.  She enjoyed singing with the Railroad chorus and playing in the F.O.K. Drum and Bugle Corps.  She liked to dance and enjoyed being a bridesmaid in her girlfriends weddings.

For many years, Doris was registered in both Ramsey and Hennepin counties as a R.S.V.P Volunteer for many causes.  For years, she volunteered at the Mpls V.A.M.C. in the Blinded Veteran’s Association office.  She served as president of their auxiliary in 2004 and 2005.  She later served as chaplain.  Her dedication to the blind was near and dear to her heart and she cherished the Hadley School for the blind.

Doris founded the Midway Area Chapter of the Red Hat Society known as the “Ruby Rollers” on May 1, 2003.  In June of 2006, she became certified as a “Competent Toastmaster” with the Eclectics Toastmasters.  She also was active in the Dorcas Society at Knox Presbyterian Church.  On September 23, 1993, their Lutheran church closed and they attended neighborhood churches after that.

Dale and Doris enjoyed vacationing together and traveled to many destinations here and abroad.  After Dale’s passing in 2002, Doris remained in the St. Paul area until medical issues brought her to the Baldwin Care Center in September 2011.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Florence Lind; husband of over 42 years, Dale; brother, Kenneth Lind; sister, Helen Jacobson; brothers-in-law, Lyle Phernetton and Clarence Jacobson; and nieces, Marcia Dawn Jacobson and Maureen Diane Jacobson. Doris is survived by her sister, Dorothy Phernetton; brother, Don (Delores) Lind; sister-in-law, Lorraine Lind; many nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will take place 11 AM Friday, February 17, 2012 at Gethsemane Lutheran Church of Baldwin, with Pastor Carmen Peterson officiating.  Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at church.  Interment will take place at Baldwin Cemetery, with casket bearers being David Phernetton, Ronald Phernetton, Steven Lind, Robert Lind, Richard Jacobson and Emil Brown.  Funeral services have been entrusted to the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Baldwin (715) 684-3434 www.oconnellfuneralhomes.com
