Mary Eileen Popelka age 90 of Woodbury, formerly St. Paul died March 28 at Hometown Senior Living in Woodbury. Mary was born on January 8, 1923 in St. Paul; the daughter of Henry and Catherine ”Clara”” (Long) Knaff. She was raised in St. Paul where she received her education at St. Joseph’s Academy. As a young woman, she enlisted in the armed forces where she proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. She would meet and later marry Raymond M Popelka on April 14, 1947 in St. Paul. This union would be further blessed with children Stephen, Paul, Mary, and Thomas. She was a proud homemaker raising their children when they lived in St. Paul for 41 years. They would move to Port Richie, FL for 21 years where she worked in home health care. Mary is survived by children Colonel Stephen (Suzanne) of Tucson, Arizona, Paul (Dee) of Snohomish, Washington, Mary Ann (Jeff) Weigel, Lakeland, MN, 5 grandchildren; Amy (David) Mineau, Jeffrey (Stephanie) Popelka, Michael (Sarah) Popelka, Thomas (Becky) Popelka, Josh Popelka, 5 great grandchildren; Elizabeth, Andrew, Claire, Sam, Natalie, sister Ag Wimmer, Woodbury. She is Preceded in death by her husband Raymond in 1999, son Thomas L Popelka, and sister Lucille. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11AM Wednesday Apr 3 at Guardian Angels Catholic Church, 8260 4th St. No., Oakdale, Minnesota. Burial with full military honors will be in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Visitation will be one hour prior to mass at church Wednesday morning. Memorials preferred.
