Mildred Smith

Mildred “Grandma Millie” Smith age 95 of Hammond died peacefully surrounded by her family Wednesday March 14th at the Hammond Health Services. Mildred was born on March 9, 1923, in St. Paul, Minnesota; the daughter of Anton and Emily (Gaisbauer) Matkaiti. She was raised in St. Paul graduating from Johnson High School. On October 27, 1945, she was united in marriage to Erven Charles Smith at the Catholic Church in St. Paul. Although she was a dedicated homemaker, she worked as a proofreader for West Publishing in the Twin Cities for short time.

Grandma Millie cherished her family. She was active in her children’s sporting and school event’s and took the greatest pleasure by trying to make all of her grandchildren’s special moments. She loved cooking and hosting feasts for football games or Sunday dinners. Her pork roast and dumplings or famous meatloaf were her family’s favorites. She loves entertaining and having themed parties. She was always up for a competitive game of poker on Friday nights, a cribbage game, and bingo as that was her favorite entertainment. She took pleasure in crocheting and giving her afghans, hats, and scarves to family and friends. Her talents were shared at the St. Croix County fair where she won many ribbons. She also loved creating crafts with her grandchildren who were the apple of her eye. She was a proud member of the Auxiliary Legion and was a Gold Star Mother following the death of her beloved son Kenneth.

Grandma Millie will never be forgotten by her children Dennis (Alicia) Smith; Tim (Claudia) Smith, Bill (Susan) Smith, Pamela Smith, Emily (Kevin) Lindus, Nancy Smith; Grandchildren Eugene Smith, Zeke (Ashley) Smith, Theresa (Jeff) Foote, Joseph (Liz) Smith, Heidi Smith, Angela (Bruce) Whitaker, Jesse Smith, Katie (Kyle) Metz, Krissy (Ben) Stephens, Kendall Rimstad, Andrew (Molly) Lindus, Adam (Staci) Lindus, Alex (Jaimee) Lindus; great-grandchildren Kenneth Smith, Travis Smith, Charles Smith, Thomas Smith, Quentin Foote, Finley Smith, Sam Smith, Ryan Boeseneilers, Casey Boeseneilers, Eli Boeseneilers, Allie (Bruce) Robey, Anja Whitaker, Mason Smith, Morgan Smith, Ellie Metz, Tyler Metz, Noah Lindus, Easton Lindus, Emilia Lindus, Gavin Hessler, Lauren Lindus, Emersyn Lindus, Alayna Lindus, Addison Lindus, and Alise Lindus.

Mass of Christian Burial for Grandma Millie will be 2PM Saturday March 24th at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hammond. Visitation will be from noon to 2pm prior to the mass at church. Burial will be in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery with her grandchildren serving as casket bearers. Funeral services have been entrusted to the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Baldwin.
