Gladys V. Schieven, known affectionately as “Gussie”, age 92 of Hammond WI, died Sunday, May 15, 2011 at the Lakeview Hospital in Rice Lake WI. Gladys was born September 7, 1918 in Lyle MN to parents Ben and Minnie (Copp) Cafourek. Gladys attended school in Lyle and Austin MN. On January 8, 1941 in Winona MN, Gladys would be united in marriage to Henry L. Schieven. To this union in marriage, a daughter Marcia, would be born.
Most folks would remember Gladys from her years of service as the Village Treasurer for the Village of Hammond. Beside her treasurer duties, Gladys helped her husband Henry with the bookkeeping for his Hammond Phillips 66 station, and enjoyed golfing and bowling as well. Gladys was a kind lady, and will be fondly remembered by the Newton’s for her care and nurturing of their daughter Jayne. Gladys became more active in her church in later years, and she and Henry would enjoy spending winters in Yuma AZ.
Gladys is survived by her grandson, Kyle (Stacy) Schlampp of Rice Lake WI; great-grandsons, Jacob and Nicholas; sisters Grace Richardson of Elsie OR, and Vila Ranniger of Manning IA; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; and daughter, Marcia Schlampp.
A time to reflect on Gladys’ life will be from 9:30-10:30AM on Friday, May 20th, with a 10:30AM Prayer Service at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home, 1010 Newton Street in Baldwin. Burial will follow at the Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis MN. Memorials preferred in lieu of flowers.
