Patrick Kenneth Close age 69 of Elmwood died unexpectedly on Friday, December 15, 2023 at the Advent Health Hospital in Durand. Patrick was born on September 25, 1954 in Red Wing, Minnesota, the son of Michael and Maxine (Hines) Close. He was raised in Ellsworth, where he attended Saint Francis Parochial School prior to graduating from the Ellsworth High School in the class of 73’.

Patrick’s professional journey led him to a fulfilling career at Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3M), where he dedicated almost four decades of his life, rising through the ranks and retiring as a General Supervisor in 2012. Just years before, in the tapestry of Patrick’s life, one of the most beautiful threads was woven when he rekindled an old high school crush, leading to a profound and enduring love story. On June 6, 2009, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ellsworth, he joyfully said, ‘I do!’ and devoted his life to Cheryl Traynor. Their blended family thrived, and Elmwood became their cherished home.

Known affectionately by Pat as ‘Blondie,’ Cheryl was the light of his life. His love for her was palpable in every moment they spent together, especially during outdoor adventures. Patrick found immense joy in taking Cheryl fishing at Big Chetac Lake, finding fulfillment not in the catch, but in witnessing Cheryl’s delight as she reeled in sunnies.

A lover of the outdoors, Patrick relished the annual deer camp, fishing escapades with his brothers in the Boundary Waters, and quiet afternoons angling for an elusive walleye on the Saint Croix. Laughter echoed through the years spent with the Close family playing euchre, and Sundays were dedicated to cheering on his beloved green and gold football team or the Milwaukee Brewers in the summer. He also enjoyed the local high school wrestling or attending tractor pulls.

A simple man with a generous heart, Patrick had a gift for connecting with others. His ability to strike up a conversation with strangers often resulted in lifelong friendships. His calming and reassuring demeanor made him a pillar of strength for family and close friends during challenging times.

Patrick will remain in the hearts of the love of his life, Cheryl; children, Dollie THEIR beloved dog, Chris (Valarie) Close of Durand, Colleen Close of Frederic,  Heather (Dan Hren) Hoffman of Hager City,WI  Brandon (Kelsy) Feuerhelm of Marshfield, WI, Kayla (Jason Bettcher) Feuerhelm of Farmington,MN; grandchildren, Jordan, Cameron, Brittney, Amilya, Allie, Broderic, Anjelynnia, Loki, Keira; siblings, Catherine Salsman, Joan (Bob) Olbrich, Joe (Lori) Close, Jeanette (Mark) Helm, Martha (Allen) Bronniche and Mary (Brent) Spriggle; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

Celebration of Life for Patrick Close will be 4 pm, Friday, December 29th, at the C3 Church in Ellsworth. Visitation will be from 2 pm to 4 pm prior to the service at C3 Church. Interment will be at a later date. Active casket bearers are Brandon Feuerhelm, Matt Close, Josh Close, Kenny Saufl, Reegan Spriggle, Ryan Fulton . Memorials are preferred to the discretion of the family.

May the memories of Patrick’s warmth, generosity, and joyful spirit bring comfort to us all during this difficult time. He will be dearly missed and forever remembered in our hearts. Funeral services have been entrusted to the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Ellsworth.
