John Hueg, age 61 of Hammond went peacefully into the arms of his Lord on Thursday, July 11, 2024 at his home, after succumbing to pancreatic cancer. John was born on September 21, 1962 in St. Paul; the son of William F. Hueg, Jr. and Alvina Louise (Sauer) Hueg. He attended elementary school at Corpus Christi prior to graduating from Cretin High School and going on to University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. Music was the great love of his life—until he met, fell in love with, and married Amy Schindler. They wed on September 4th, 1993 in Bird Island, MN and subsequently brought three beautiful children into this world: Anna, Claire, and Joe.

John’s childhood years in St. Anthony Park were spent playing with neighborhood friends, matching his six siblings in wit and wiles, practicing his trumpet, and working his first jobs as a newspaper delivery boy and cashier at Speedy Market.

He entered the financial industry in 1991 and joined what was to become Wells Fargo in 1993. His time at Wells Fargo spanned 28 and a half years—with a career leading quality management, operational excellence, and compliance—before retiring in 2021.

John and Amy built a beautiful home in Hammond after moving from St. Paul in 2004. He loved working outside—usually with Amy at his side—taking pride in landscaping and finding solitude out on his lawn mower. He spent many nights sitting on the front porch with a bourbon and a cigar, reflecting on the day’s effort or pondering life’s larger questions, and happy to do it alone or with cherished company alike.

His love for music was expansive—he played, sang, listened and danced to it—and encompassed several instruments: trumpet, tuba, and euphonium. He first performed with the St. Paul Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps and the collegiate band at St. Thomas, and as an adult performed with the St. Paul Police Band, St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Church Choir, SCC Alumni and Community Band, and numerous others. He supported a love for music in others, most notably by establishing the SCC Band Boosters Program and volunteering with Youth in Music.

He believed in doing what you loved and sharing it with others. He gave freely of his time, knowledge, and resources: he served on the St. Croix Central (SCC) School Board, announced games as the Voice of the Panthers, and taught faith formation for confirmation students at St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception. At different points in his life, he was a parish trustee and council chair, a Big Brothers Big Sisters Twin Cities board member, a TEC Retreat speaker, and many other such roles. These efforts were always born from a desire to honor the talents God gave him and to give deeply to his community.

Despite a long resume of career accomplishments and personal endeavors, his legacy will be the relationships he formed in these spaces. He always welcomed people openly, listened intently, and loved deeply. His ability to connect often turned a room of strangers into a gathering of friends.

John is survived by his wife Amy; their children Anna Maria Dehn and husband AJ Dehn, Claire Louise Hueg and partner Connor Harty, Joseph Schindler Hueg and fiancee Katie Runyon; siblings Bill, Tom (Teresa), Paul (Lynn), Mark (Kristin), Mike (Theresea) and brother-in-law Tom Blackman; as well as a host of nieces and nephews. His parents and sister Anne Blackman precede him in death.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 4 PM, Wednesday, July 17th at St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hammond, 1265 Ridgeway Street. Click here to livestream. Interment will be in the Resurrection Catholic Cemetery in Mendota Heights. Visitation will be on Tuesday, from 4 PM to 8 PM at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Hudson, 520 South 11th Street, as well as 2 PM to 4 PM prior to the mass at church Wednesday afternoon. John invited those joining us to dress in colorful summer attire to celebrate his journey home to heaven.

  1. My favorite memory was exactly one of those nights sitting on John’s front porch with a bourbon and a cigar, reflecting on the day’s effort after John invited me to his home to spend time and meet his family when I was traveling from out of town and missing mine. What a kind and generous person and role model for all.

  2. Amy, We are saddened to learn of your loss. John was such a wonderful man. Your life together was amazing. He will live in your heart and memories for ever.
