O'Connell Family Funeral Home
520 11th Street South
Hudson WI, 54016

Douglas R. Stein, 66, of Hudson, WI passed away unexpectedly on July 31, 2023. He was a beloved son, brother, father, grandfather, and dog lover.
Doug enjoyed walking the prairie with his golden retriever, Toby, and their neighborhood walking companions; woodworking with his son, Aaron; gardening; reading; cooking; grilling; and watching Marvel movies. Keeping the Carpenter Nature Center’s prairie mowed so that dogs and humans alike could enjoy the paths was a contribution he gladly made to his neighborhood. He especially loved when the lupine bloomed in the spring and delighted in sharing that beauty with his children and granddaughters. Grandpa Doug cherished his time with his granddaughters, and would have a permanent smile on his face when they were around. He was always willing to “eat” whatever Emilia made for him in her play kitchen.
Born in Dearborn, Michigan on July 18, 1957, he moved with his family to Port Edwards, WI where he completed high school in 1975. He graduated from UW-River Falls with a BS in English and from the University of MN with an MFA degree. He began his career at the U of MN Bindery and retired as a Senior Content Analyst with Bestbuy.com.
Doug is survived by his children Lauren (Andrew) Mattson of River Falls, and Aaron (Marissa Smook) Stein of Minneapolis; his adored granddaughters Emilia and Lainey Mattson; his parents Donald and Patricia (Mahaney) Stein of Wisconsin Rapids; siblings Don (Sharon) Stein, Greg Stein, and Susan (Scott Ellefson) Stein, nephews Joe and Shane Stein. He is further survived by his former wife, LeAnn Stein, uncle Ronny and aunt Sally Stein and uncle Jim Mahaney along with many cousins in the Ohio area where he enjoyed many summer vacations. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, his aunt Evelyn Smitley, his aunt Janette Mahaney, his sister-in-law Connie Stein and niece Lindsey Stein.
A Gathering of Friends and Family will be held on Monday, August 7 from 2-4 pm at the O’Connell Family Funeral and Cremation Services of Hudson, WI, 520 S. 11th St.

  1. I’m so sorry to hear about Doug’s passing. I worked with him on the eCommerce team 20 years ago and he was a delight, always joking and smiling! He would feign knowing how to speak French, “Je m’appelle… Doog.” He put a lot of joy into the world. Much love to his family.

  2. I am so sorry to learn of Doug’s passing, what a shock. I will miss Doug’s FB posts, they always made me laugh, or maybe even think. I will miss this man from Port Edwards.

Love to the Stein family from one of his JEHS classmates.

  3. Hello darkness, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again

I will never forget listening to you sing The Sound of Silence with your brother Don, while I played guitar. The beautiful blend of your voices as you sang those haunting harmonies will forever be part of the soundtrack for the Class of ’74 and ’75.

Thank you for the music, your crazy sense of humor, and your kindness.

My heart goes out to Don and everyone else in the family.

  4. Pat & Don and families, My deepest sympathies in the loss of your beloved son, father, & grandfather. I worked with Pat for many years at Riverview Hospital and she was also so proud of her family.

  5. Doug was a close childhood friend and am saddened by his passing. I will always remember the fun times with our gang in the woods and railroad tracks. Doug was always an adventurous kid with a great imagination with a naturally happy disposition.

My thoughts and prayers for his adoring family and to Don Jr. and Gregg.

  6. I worked with Doug at Best Buy over ten years ago now and was saddened to see the announcement of his passing on LinkedIn. To Doug’s family and friends – I very much enjoyed working with Doug – he was the type of coworker that made you feel like your problems weren’t insurmountable and he would roll up his sleeves to offer advice, solutions, or just out and out help.
What a wonderful human being we have lost. Big healing energy from Arizona.

  7. Stein family my sincere condolences on the passing of Doug together we spent quite a bit of time together during our days at UW-River Falls, god bless and keep him
