Jean Dorothy Bertelsen, 84, a resident of Wintergreen apartments in Hudson, passed away on July 13, 2013 at the American Heritage Care Center in Hammond.
She was born on October 7, 1928, daughter of Otto and Edith (Doud) Anderson in the town of Manchester, Jackson County, Wis. She attended Oak Ridge Elementary, a one room schoolhouse, and graduated from high school in Black River Falls in 1945. After graduation, she went to work as a clerk-stenographer at Fort McCoy, Wis., and later at Fort Sheridan, Ill., and the 5th Army Headquarters in Chicago, Ill. She also worked at the Veterans Hospital in Tomah, Wis., and for the Jackson County Welfare Department in Black River Falls.
In 1948 Jean married John Schleicher and they had one daughter, Kathy (Mike) Peterson, who lives in Belgrade, Montana. In 1957 she married Hugh Bertelsen and had three children — Kevin, Winter Garden, Florida.; Kenneth (Jolene), St. Paul Park, Minnesota; and Karolyn (Tim) Gamble, Northfield, Minnesota. She is survived by her husband, her four children, four grandchildren — Heather (Josh) Campbell, Moreno Valley Ranch, California; Erin (Charlie) Gilmore, Helena, Montana; Tyler Bertelsen, St. Paul Park, Minnesota; and Kelsey Bertelsen, St. Paul Park, Minnesota — five great grandchildren, Kyle and Ryan Campbell, and Braden, Tanner, and Camden Gilmore; and one step great grandchild, Scott Campbell. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Norman and Richard. She is also survived by one sister, Ginny (David) Noble, Sacramento, California, one brother, Robert (Janet) Anderson, Black River Falls, Wisconsin, and by numerous nieces and nephews.
After her years of working for the government, she became a stay-at-home Mom who had many volunteer jobs. Jean also enjoyed reading, sewing, quilting and traveling, having visited all of the lower 48 states, Hawaii, Norway, England and Europe. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a member of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution). She and her husband were also members of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Baldwin, where they served in many capacities, including as adult leaders of the Luther League for seven years.
Visitation will take place 4:00 – 7:00 PM Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home, 1010 Newton St., Baldwin and one hour prior to the service at church. Funeral Services will take place 11:00 AM Thursday, July 18, 2013 at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 1350 Florence St., Baldwin, with Pastor Carrie Anderson officiating. A luncheon will follow the service. Private interment will take place on Friday, July 19 in Black River Falls at the Riverview Cemetery.
