Lloyd “Ernie” Sellman, age 91, of Hudson, Wisconsin, passed away Monday, October 3, 2011, at Comforts of Home in Hudson, Wisconsin.
Ernie was born on August 7, 1920, in Taylors Falls, MN, to Algot and Alma (Sedlund) Sellman. He graduated from high school in Taylors Falls, and enrolled at the University of Minnesota. Before he finished his undergraduate degree in political science, Ernie joined the United States Navy in 1942, attaining the rank of Commander. While in the Navy, he served in World War II as a cargo pilot and flight instructor. He was a pilot in the Berlin Airlift in 1948, and later served for four years on the U.S.S. Wasp as a supply officer. He completed his B.A. in 1960 with a degree from the University of Minnesota. Ernie married Olive Perrigo on May 13, 1944 in Atlanta, GA. In 1965, following his retirement from the Navy, they moved to Little Canada, MN, where Ernie founded Sellman Tax and Accounting Service, which he operated until 1995. Ernie and Olive moved to Stillwater, MN, in 2006, then to Hudson, WI, in 2008, to be closer to family.
Ernie loved golf and spending time with family, and especially enjoyed manicuring his lawn. He was an avid bridge player and liked games in general. He enjoyed following the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Twins, and had a love for traveling, having traveled throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia with his family.
Ernie is survived by his son Mike (Renee) Sellman of River Falls and daughter Lynne (Wayne) Kaiser of Hudson; grandchildren Ashley Huppert of River Falls, WI, Eric (Kerry) Sellman of Chanhassen, MN, Jill (Alex) Wells of River Falls, WI, Andy Sellman of River Falls, WI, Kristen (Yander) Sanchez of Hastings, MN, Christy Kaiser of Durham, NC, and Sara Kaiser of Washington, D.C.; seventeen great-grandchildren, and brother Dale (Carol) Sellman of St. Paul, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Olive; siblings Arlene Carlson, Everett Sellman, Earl Sellman, and Doris Hasselquist; and son, Jerry Sellman.
A Funeral Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, October 7, 2011 at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home – Hudson Chapel. Reverend Paul Martin will officiate. Visitation will be held for 1 hour prior to services. Burial will follow at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Services are in the care of the O’Connell Family Funeral Home, Hudson. 715.386.3725
