Master Guitarist Craig Powell

Master Guitarist Craig Powell also known as “Screamer” passed away on April 112023, at the age of 61, after a long and courageous battle with chronic health issues. He was surrounded by his loved ones.

Craig was a talented guitarist who had a passion for music. He began his prolific career in the early 1980s with the band Gentlemen of Style, which was popular throughout the Quad Cities during that time. After some time, he was recruited by Prince to join the band Maserati.  Craig also composed and performed the guitar music for Prince’s renowned hit song “Kiss”. After working with Prince, Craig founded the band Wayo Dayo Band.  Craig also played with the band Westside for over 10 years. After his time with Westside, he started the band Screamers Addiction simultaneously while releasing his solo album “War” in 2014.

The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Craig. He loved spending time with his family and close friends, and he loved to laugh. His pleasant personality was contagious to everyone he met.

Craig is survived by his significant other Brenda Gullickson; children: Ashley Hillsman, Sheena Oates, Craig Powell Jr., Michael Smith, and Christopher Powell; his brother Bryan Rankin, his sisters Syndy Powell, Pam Powell, Melissa Robbins; his birth mother Willa Rankin; many lifelong friends and  many cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents Thomas Powell and Morgan Bay Powell;  his sisters Sheila Rankin, Kim Rankin, Karen Kennedy; and his brother Sam Rankin. Craig will be truly missed, and his loved ones will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest.

Craig was laid to rest at the Prairie Oaks Memorial Gardens in Inver Grove Heights. A fitting celebration of life is being planned. Memorials may be directed to the funeral home. Funeral services entrusted to the O’Connell Family Funeral Homes, 130 No. Grant Street, Ellsworth, WI 54011.
