Steven Harold Findlay, age 74, of Prescott, WI died on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at the U of M Medical Center. Steve lived his life with vigor and optimism even after his cancer diagnosis in 2020. He was born on September 7, 1949 in Minneapolis, MN to Donald and Margaret (Boucher) Findlay. While a teenager Steve was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. After High School, Steve enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1968, serving 4 years of active duty and another 37 years in the reserves retiring in 2009 as a Commander. Steve also was a proud volunteer firefighter for United Fire in Baldwin, WI for 10 years followed by 12 years with Prescott Fire.

Steve found enduring love with Cindy, whom he married on May 12, 2012. He embraced Cindy’s children and grandchildren as his own, enriching their lives with his presence, love and support. Steve’s willingness to step into the role of a grandfather with open arms speaks volumes about his character and generous spirit. He was very active in their lives, attending many concerts, recitals and sporting events. Steve loved spending time with them in the outdoors around the campfire whether at home or on fishing and camping adventures. He loved to do things with all of the grandchildren even when that meant traveling across the country to visit and cheer them on in their latest endeavor.

Along with Steve’s dedication to the fire department, he was also the caretaker of ‘The 37’ which was the first fire truck the Prescott Fire Department had ever purchased. He meticulously maintained The 37 and was proud to have it showcased yearly in the Prescott Daze Parade.

Steve always had a passion for learning and giving. His final wish was granted in that his body was donated to the U of M’s Anatomy Bequest Program.

Steve is survived by his wife Cindy: stepchildren: Clara & Eric Stanley, Abbigail & Chad Nawrocki, and Paul & Jeana Larson; grandchildren: Benjamin, Alan, Anna, Ellie, Charlie and Caleb; siblings: Donald & Bonny Findlay, Robert Findlay, William & Ann Findlay, Carolyn & Dennis Knutson and Diane & Ernie Malick; along with seven nieces and nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Margaret and his brother-in-law, Lee Haugen.

A Remembrance Gathering will be from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Monday, February 19, 2024, at Joy Lutheran Church: 1435 St. Croix Street, Prescott, WI 54021.

  1. So sorry to hear of Steve’s passing. Many fond memories working with Steve and discussing our Coast Guard connections. Strength to Steve’s family.

  2. I met Steve back in 2012 when he joined the Prescott Fire Dept. He was a very dedicated firefighter who was always one of the first to volunteer for improvement projects around the hall. One of those guys who saw something that should be done, he would do it. Steve spent many hours going above and beyond what is required to be a firefighter. Although he wasn’t the type who needed recognition, Steve was our well-deserved Firefighter of the Year in 2014. Truly one of the good guys! RIP my friend, until we meet again.
