William Lee “Bill” Stoetzel, age 70 of Lakeland, passed away July 20, 2014 surrounded by his family at The Gathering with Lakeview Hospice in Oak Park Heights. Bill was born June 7, 1944 in Beldenville, WI, the son of Leo ”Swede”” and Arlene (Foss) Stoetzel. He graduated from Ellsworth High School and furthered his education in chemistry and math at the University of Wisconsin – River Falls. He was united in marriage on July 31, 1965 in Ellsworth to his high school sweetheart, Diane Hanson. In 1976 their marriage was blessed with a son, Paul. Bill started his work career as a chemical engineer for 3M in 1967, retiring in 1994. During his career at 3M, Bill secured numerous patents and awards in the department of abrasives technologies. After retirement, Bill turned his and Diane’s hobby of dealing antiques into a full time business.
Outside of work, Bill enjoyed the peacefulness of being outdoors, fishing and hunting. He was a voracious reader, antique lover, and avid card player, especially enjoying the game of bridge with his wife, Diane. Bill was a sports enthusiast, and a devoted Green Bay Packer fan.
Bill will remain in the hearts of his loving wife, Diane; son, Paul; sisters, Sally Shewchuk of Indiana and Mary Ann (John) Devney of Farmington, MN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Arlene Stoetzel.
A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held from 1:00 – 3:00 PM, with a 3:00 PM Celebration of Life Service, Saturday, July 26, 2014 at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home, 520 S. 11th St., Hudson. Bill’s final wishes were for his body to be donated to the University of Minnesota Anatomical Bequest Program, allowing others to further their education. Memorials are preferred to Lakeview Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
